Kabbalah is as enigmatic as it is complex because it is an ancestral tradition and this has meant that despite being of Jewish origin, it has incorporated almost all the currents of mysticism in its interpretation of reality.

Some famous artists like Madonna study Kabbalah as a means of spiritual evolution. Do you want to know what Kabbalah is, its types and how can Kabbalistic psychology help us? You have come to the right place!

What is Kabbalah

Kabbalah definition: in Hebrew it means "to receive", is a doctrine within the Jewish tradition and is a means to achieve spiritual elevation through the interpretation of the Torah, which for Christians comes to be the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible, corresponding to the Old Testament).

The knowledge that it intends to reveal can be understood in a metaphysical way, such as the search for enlightenment. Kabbalah becomes the means through which to get to know the reality that surrounds us because it demands another interpretation of what happens to us, going towards the hidden meanings in which we rarely repair.

Therefore, Kabbalah has the ultimate goal of answering the great questions that human beings have always asked themselves, such as why we are here or what is the meaning of life, if God exists, and so on. It is said that Moses was the one who received the Torah along with the table of the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai. Since then, Kabbalistic knowledge has passed from generation to generation orally, from teacher to disciple, although today and thanks to the era of telecommunication, we can all benefit from this profound knowledge.

Types of Kabbalah

Kabbalah is so wide that it has logically diversified over time. There are mainly two types: a symbolic (or artificial) Kabbalah and a dogmatic Kabbalah, also considered as the Kabbalah cabal.

Artificial Kabbalah (or symbolic)

For Kabbalists, language is a creator and sacred texts contain all the combinations that can be given to create other worlds and other realities. Kabbalist mystics understand that the name of God is made up of all the letters that make up the alphabet and that it, therefore, has multiple forms. God used the letters to create the Universe through the Sefirot.

Therefore, when deciphering the secret meaning of the Bible, Kabbalists inquire into the symbolism of numbers and letters. Each word corresponds to a number and from this, they intend to find encrypted messages in the sacred texts. Another procedure is to place and reorder the words of the Bible, so that new messages are generated. In this sense,  Kabbalah acquires an esoteric hue that is used in certain types of ceremonial magic.

Dogmatic Kabbalah (real)

It focuses on the reinterpretation of the message of the Bible, as it was written. Knowing divinity and its words teaches us to begin approaching our inner divinity. This wisdom can help us to reconcile with this reality where evil prevails, being able to avoid it or even replace it with good. In this case, Kabbalah acquires deeply psychological connotations. This type of current has given rise to what is known as Kabalistic psychology.

How can Kabbalah improve our life? Discovering Kabbalistic Psychology

The by-product of the biblical interpretations of the Kabbalah reveals a new perspective on life: that all the problems and sufferings we experience are planned to make us understand our own imperfections. Understanding our failures is the only way we can improve them. Anxiety is our great enemy in this process of deep learning, leading us in many cases to continued and unnecessary suffering.

Knowing how to ignore the anxiety caused by our problems is knowing how to live, because life will always be full of difficulties. Wouldn't it be better to learn to live with our anxiety, instead of allowing us to exist in that state of permanent tension?

In Kabbalistic psychology, we must go through three phases before freeing ourselves from all this discomfort and thus fulfilling the purpose of our life.

Submission

The first step towards the spiritual practice of Kabbalah is submission, or ego reduction. The ego is that mask that we have put on, because we are unaware of our true inner strength. The socialization process wanted us submissive and adaptable to what was expected of us, resulting in people prioritizing the external as a general rule over the internal, and therefore, the true essence of our soul is unknown.

To get rid of the mask of the ego, we must be aware of how small we really are in this infinite universe. Maximizing our problems and giving them excessive importance helps to enlarge our ego, because all we do is ruminate and focus on the negative of our situation instead of developing a proactive attitude.

Separation

Once we silence the ego, our problems take on a different form. Instead of worrying constantly and unconsciously about our poor ability to solve the problem, we resolve to focus on the problem as such. From the love and attention to the details of the problem that lies ahead, it is how we manage to give ourselves to the solution we need. Silencing the voices that prevent us from hearing, we are ready for the next phase.

Sweetening

Finally, in the final and most important stage of this method, we are aware of our true spiritual strength and this leads us, with practice and perseverance, to be able to find good within evil.

This means that once we are able to ignore anxiety to focus on the details, adversities can be faced with positivity and optimism, because no matter how negative a situation may seem, the key to our personal growth will always be contained in it. Being able to discover the light of good within the darkest situations is what will make us true sages.
