Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): What Is Tapping Therapy? | iSTOCK

What if you could solve your stress, anxiety and depression problems with a few taps to some parts of your body? At first, it may seem an absurd technique. However, tapping therapy has been revealed as one of most popular energy therapies or EFTs (Emotional Freedom Techniques). More and more people agree on its effectiveness and the best thing about it is that you can do it yourself! Keep reading to find out more.

What is tapping therapy?

The basis of the energy therapy known as tapping is that all your problems (whether they are related to love, family, finances, self-esteem, etc.) are caused by internal imbalances that are found within your body. The tapping therapy develops a technique to get rid of these imbalances by gently tapping some parts of your body.

Behind this seemingly superficial technique, there is a whole philosophy that can be summed up in this motto: to solve a problem, you must expose it and eliminate it. Therefore, as you will see below, the first stage is to bring the problem back to life, speak it into existence, and then, overcome the problem by assimilating it.

In this case, the tapping therapy has become a highly sought-after therapy that contradicts the principles of another trend, which is that of positive thinking. While positive thinking suggests getting rid of problems by giving priority to optimistic and enthusiastic ideas, tapping therapy works on the principle that problems have to come to light.

How does tapping (EFT) work?

In fact, tapping is an ancient therapy that has recently been rediscovered and updated as an adjunct therapy for life transformation and fighting against stress and depression.

1. Recite the problem

Like most eastern techniques, tapping is not a miracle cure that you can turn to whenever you want and activate its benefits. It is a deeper spiritual dimension that you have to access through relaxation and meditation. In this energy therapy, you start from the mind and move towards the spirit and the body.

The essential thing is to get used to the problem and bring it out. So, the first step is to orally express what you want to change in your life, or those concerns that you worry about.

You may express it in a negative way when you try to become aware of the problem you want to eliminate. For example: “I’m broke”, “I am fat”, “my relationship is a mess” or “I feel bad”. However, you can also do it in a positive way, as an attempt to resonate with the law of attraction: “I want to be a leader in the office”, “I will reach economic success”, “I have an enviable figure” or “I love myself as I am”.

2. Tap some areas of your body

Actually, this second step goes hand in hand with the first one. While you expose the problem and attract change through your words, you have to tap some particular areas of your body. These tapping points are not random, they are found in the acupuncture meridians.

  1. The side of the hand, between the base of the little finger and the wrist.
  2. The top of the head.
  3. The inner end of the eyebrow.
  4. The side of the eye.
  5. The bone under the eye.
  6. The area between the nose and upper lip.
  7. The depression between the chin and the lower lip.
  8. The inner end of the collarbone.
  9. The area under the armpit.
  10. The inner angle of the thumb nail.
  11. The inner angle of the index fingernail.
  12. The inner angle of the middle fingernail.
  13. The inner angle of the little fingernail.

EFT tapping therapy training

Tapping is a kind of therapy that has become as fashionable as reiki or acupuncture, and what is more, you can do it yourself at home. It is a fairly simple technique, in which the most important aspect is the mental and spiritual training.

In a tapping therapy session, it is essential to identify the problem or what you want to change in your life. It is important to remember something: you are not saying things for someone else, but for yourself! The idea is that you assimilate your problem and then, bring it to light. That is why it uses a pleasant, informal and direct language. You should avoid pretentious or shallow constructions.

Choose a phrase and repeat it slowly as you tap the first tapping point. If your problem is related to being unemployed, repeat the following sentence: “Although I do not have a job, I completely accept myself”. If you are lovesick, say: “Although my love is not returned, I completely accept myself”. Always follow the same setup while you start tapping gently.

From now on, start tapping the rest of the tapping points in the order mentioned before while reciting the problem statement: “I have no job”, or “My love is not returned”. Follow all the points in their order, tapping gently with your index finger. The speed and number of taps is irrelevant. It takes a few tapping therapy sessions to notice the first changes, but no specific period of time can be mentioned, since it depends on the problem and your mental strength.
