This 20 March 2019, sky-gazers will enjoy the last supermoon of 2019, known as the full super worm moon which should be visible a few hours after the official start to spring marked by the spring equinox.

What is the super worm moon?
The super worm moon on Wednesday promises an extraordinary show as the final star in this years' three back-to-back supermoons and the changes we will experience are not limited to the horoscope.
Firstly, the moon will reach its closest point to Earth, known as lunar perigee, on Tuesday at 3:47 p.m. ET, but the moon won’t be full until Wednesday at 9:43 p.m. ET. The moon is usually about 386.242 km away from Earth, but at perigee this month, it will come within about 359.366 km of our planet, according to NASA.
Secondly, and quite remarkably, this full super worm moon will coincide (after 19 years) with the spring equinox which means that days will be longer in the Northern hemisphere where it marks the beginning of spring. In the Southern Hemisphere, however, it signals the beginning of autumn.
The Super Worm Equinox Moon arrives at the same time worldwide, at 1.42am UTC. This translates to the following time zones in North America and Europe:
- London: 1.42am GMT March 21
- Mainland Europe: 2.42am CET March 21
- Washington D.C: 9.42pm EDT March 20
- Los Angeles: 8.42pm PDT March 20
Why "worm" moon?
Northern Native American tribes had a preference for strange names (blood wolf moon, full crow moon, full crust moon ) when it came to baptizing their full moons, especially after 1930.
The name comes from the fact that it's the first full moon of March and as the temperature begins to warm up, the ground starts to thaw, and earthworms appear, announcing the return of spring. For this reason, the March full moon is often known as the full worm moon.
Nevertheless, it has also been called "full crow moon" as the birds' crowing heralded the end of winter, and "full sugar supermoon" because it coincides with the beginning of the maple syrup season.
